Superbowl Anthem: Jordin Sparks…was she lip-syncing?

I’m going on record as saying that Jordin Sparks was lip-syncing the national anthem. Oh my god that was obvious!

Go Giants! Please save us from the evil that is the Cheatriots…I mean, Patriots.

EDIT: Evidently they Pre-record all performances for the Super Bowl. I think that’s disrespectful to the anthem.

FYI: Prince was NOT lipsincing during his performance in the last Super Bowl.

Okay, here’s an add-on to the above post, to explain my position on this subject.  Taken directly from a reply to a comment on this post:

The National Anthem isn’t “Just a song” as you state. It’s the song of our country. It’s a symbol of our home and what the US is supposed to represent. So, there’s one flaw in your argument.

Knowing the song has an innate greater sense of importance, it’s paramount to ensure it’s authenticity and quality.

What is the purpose of lip-syncing? To pretend, fake, or mimic a performance. In other words, it isn’t a real performance, and it’s intent is deception. In this case to convince people that the performance is live, and perfect, when really the performer isn’t confident to sing the song live as intended.

Hence the analogy I gave with other live venues. The same reason you wouldn’t want your favorite band to fake a performance: it’s of lesser quality.

PURPOSELY giving a performance of lesser quality when singing what is arguably the most important song in America, is disrespectful. Which is why Whitney Houston took issue with it for her Anthem 4 years ago. (see, I’m not the only one)

I’m sure most of the country agrees with me when I say that a live performance is better than a lip-synced one. I’m also sure most would agree with me when I say acts like Milli Vanilli were frauds.

Every National Anthem at the Super Bowl is recorded because they don’t want any problems with the music. It came out a few years ago when Whitney Houston complained and said that she only sings live.

I did some research, and I saw NOTHING that supports that. Can you point out something so I can read it?

My husband, who played in the Superbowl a few years ago, told me that EVERYTHING musical is pre-recorded, including marching bands!

She was lip syncing. So was Tom Petty.

That’s sad…I find that kind of disrespectful to the anthem for some reason.

Who is your husband? Very cool!

it has to do with the way sounds bounces around in these large arenas. it’s all about sound! not to be disrespectful or anything.

I didn’t watch the Superbowl, but have watch Youtube clips of past performances.. but I would think that they should lip sync in order to not be lose their voices… the stadium is so big, how can they project without their voices cracking or something happening?

If they already sang it already, then just their presence is good in this rapidly becoming celebrity dabbled affair.

    Chibbigiril,

I hear you, but they don’t do that for other large events. Events that are considered just as important, ie world series, the World Cup (Bigger stadiums more viewers, 2 anthems), and NBA and NHL championships.

Also, anthems aren’t recorded for the other NFL games. I know the gal that’s sometimes asked to sing anthems for the Broncos, never has she lip-synced.

And I’m not saying they are TRYING to be disrespectful, but just that they are indeed disrespecting the anthem by pre-recording it.

So every recording of the anthem is disrespectful? WTF? That makes no sense.

I find it a lot more respectful to make sure it gets done RIGHT than leave it up to the chance that music could get messed up, she could forget the words, she could have problems dealing with the massive echo etc….a MILLION things could go wrong, but with a recording, there’s only a few.

Not that I care, because it’s just a song.

    zombie z,

You find it respectful “That it get’s done right” WTF? That sentence is stupid. The point is, that it DIDN’T get done right. It didn’t get done at all. It’s a recording. It’s a live event, and it should be live.

With your logic, why not just have EVERY artist lip-sync at EVERY concert? They don’t. You’re telling me you’d prefer to see your favorite band at a concert lip-sync? Pllleeaasssee. Know why you wouldn’t? Because LIVE IS BETTER.

“Just a song”? You must be Canadian, anyway does anyone remember the messed up and disrespectful version from Roseanne Barr???

That in itself is a great reason to pre record it. As for the sound factor and having to project the singers voice….Isn’t that what sound equipment is for? A singer can whisper and the sound can fill a stadium.

    Just my opinion.

Everything on this thread was in regards to the anthem and how it was disrespectful for it to be recorded — not about concerts in general.

I think it’s just a song and it hardly matters if it’s recorded or not. I don’t even know why it’s done at all, or why we have to watch someone pretend to sing it.

You failed to explain how it makes sense that a recording of the anthem is disrespectful…

  12. February 4, 2008 at 6:35 pm

    Just A Voice,

Hahhahaha… Good point about Roseanne Barr. Of course, I think that’s more of a reason NOT to get a bad singer as opposed to a reason to pre-record the song.

I’m not saying that it shouldn’t be done right, but rather the right talent needs to be selected to get it done.

    RE: Zombie Z,

Just like you failed to explain why it isn’t disrespectful.

But I’ll try and use small words:

The National Anthem isn’t “Just a song” as you state. It’s the song of our country. It’s a symbol of our home and what the US is supposed to represent. So, there’s one flaw in your argument.

Knowing the song has an innate greater sense of importance, it’s paramount to ensure it’s authenticity and quality.

Just to let you know, at the world cup they don’t have a singer sing the anthems. They just have a abnd playing it and then the crowd shows there national pride by singing along to the melody. That is something I wouldn’t mind seeing done here.
